In Sickness and In Health

August 29, 2007 · 2 Comments

I have been knocked out sick since last Saturday. I had a sore throat Friday that I thought was just allergies, but by Saturday, I had a fever of 102, cough, runny nose, and felt like death warmed over. Sunday was no better, and all I managed to do all weekend was lay on my air mattress in the middle of my living room and watch movies. Monday I went into work late, and managed to stay the whole day but still felt pretty icky. Tuesday, thinking I was doing better, I went to work, but apparently, I had a bad drug interaction or something because around 9am the world started to look like it was moving. By noon, the world was spinning so much, I had to have my mother drive me home and left my car at work. I was dizzy all afternoon, and my called my doctor. They wanted to see me because it sounded like I had an inner ear infection to them. Well, by 9pm that night (12 hours after I had taken the 12 hour medicine that seems to have caused the dizziness) the world had stopped spinning, and I felt mostly normal again.

And thank goodness for that, because I have an interview with a recruiter at noon today, and a phone interview with hiring manager at 3:30. Cross your fingers for me!

Wish List

August 22, 2007 · 2 Comments

My birthday is just around the corner (Sept. 17th) and I have started thinking about my birthday wish list to give to my parents my parents…Of highest priority this year, I think I am asking for a new pocket-sized camera because mine is having issues these days…See this picture from a relatively well-lit wedding last weekend:

My Friend Eric, The Ghost!

My friend Eric has been reduced to a ghost! Not a good sign…

So a camera is on the list. Also on the list, is an apron from this company. I am in love with these retro aprons! I am torn between my favorites, but I think this might be it:

Or possibly this one:

What do you think? Which one?

A Breath of Fresh Air

August 21, 2007 · 1 Comment

While the Category 5, hurricane Dean hits the Yucatan Peninsula, Dallas has gotten a salty, humid, and cool breeze. Every time there is a hurricane in the gulf, we seem to get a wind change from the watery action down there. I love that. 1000 miles away, a storm is brewing, and we feel the effects here. It is supposed to get into the nineties today, but it is currently only 82F with a thick breeze that feels like the winds off the ocean. It’s a delicious feeling that reminds me of summers from my childhood with the humid, windy air. And the scent of salty ocean just adds to it, making me wish upon wish that my office window opened.

Venting

Let’s say you worked with someone who refused to learn to use a computer properly, but needed to use it on a daily basis. Someone who was older than you, someone who has been in business for years. But they can’t seem to learn to “copy/paste”, let alone do more complicated tasks on a computer like burn a CD, or well, even double-click the mouse button properly. You have tried to teach them on several occasions, but with little success. You have suggested many times that they would benefit greatly from a computer basics class, but to no avail.

What would you do?

Now throw in the wrench that said co-worker was your mother. And throw in all the relationship nuances that that entails.

What would you do?

‘Cause oh my God, my mother is driving me batty. Seriously, batty. She refuses to take a computer class, and insists she is fine. She can do whatever she needs to. Problem is, she can’t. And when I leave this job, she is going to be in a serious spot. There will be no one to call into her office when she can’t figure out that she moved a file from one folder to another instead of copy/pasting it. There will be no one to burn CDs for her, or explain simple computer problems.

She is a smart woman. There is no reason for this ineptitude. If she would just take a class and let someone who is used to teaching basic computer skills teach her, she would be fine.

But until that day, she drives me batty with the computer!

A Bulleted List

  • I think I am going to leave this masthead up for awhile. I like it.
  • Target sells the coolest things! They sell a lighting kit like this one, but at a fraction of the cost ($39.99!) of the one I linked to. It turns a recessed light into a hanging pendant light in a matter of minutes! All you do is unscrew your current light bulb, screw in the pendant converter (just like a light bulb!), shorten the cord, and tighten the ceiling plate! DONE! I’ll have to take a picture of it and post how it looks.
  • I FINALLY found my favorite whole house air freshener! Again, at Target (and again, their website doesn’t have the product on it!!). It’s like this product on Amazon.com. They are scented sheets that you stick to your air filter. Then when you put your air filter in, the scent is distributed throughout your house, via the central air. If you’ve ever gone house hunting and walked into a house that smells suspiciously good in every single room, yet fail to see any burning candles or plug-ins, this is likely how they are doing it. They rock!
  • And finally, I went to a friend’s going away party Friday, and had an awesome time. I brought my camera for the first time in a long while, and I went snap-happy! I got on a kick of taking those hold-the-camera-in-front-of-you shots, and took a zillion of myself with other people…and by myself…Then I decided to shoot myself hugging all of my friends. There’s a whole series, and I will get them uploaded to Flickr tonight, but until then, here’s a taste! :)
