Whatcha Doin’ Johnny?

March 30, 2006 · 2 Comments

John McCain may be off my possible list of Republicans I could vote for. I just learned he is getting buddy buddy with Jerry Faldwell. He is apparently seeing eye to eye with Jerry Faldwell on abortion issues, and gay marriage rights. That means he is either grossly pandering to the Christian Conservative Right, or his tolerant moderate views are changing. Either way, it doesn’t sit well with me.

Have you ever noticed how the last sip of a diet coke from a styrofoam cup tastes like soap?

I swear! It tastes like detergent…try it for yourself.

Our President is Taking Questions!

Watching the press conference the Prez is giving at Freedom House while I eat lunch…He looks sunburnt…with raccoon eyes from sunglasses or goggles…where was HE the past couple days?? If I can find a picture, I will post it later…just sorta funny…

He did make a pretty funny (hopefully not serious) comment about having not read Freedom House’s most recent publication…”small type, no pictures…heh, heh, heh.”

For All You Party Animals Out There

Heard while listening to 96.7 The Twister this morning:

It’s spring break! Just think, one hour of dry-heaving is like doing 2,000 sit-ups!

Now that’s my kind of logic!

I just had an epiphany about the current immigration/illegal alien hoop-la going on in congress.
I saw this picture, and bam! It was clear what has been bothering me about this issue lately.
Yes, the U.S.A. is made by immigrants, but they are of the LEGAL sort. I have no earthly problem with immigrants. They are what created this country. That sign is right. But they came here legally. They were processed legally. (Yes, I realize the early settlers do not apply, but I am going to take a leap to somewhere in the 19th century on this one…to when they were immigrants and not settlers…) They came en mass to Ellis Island. They came in disgusting conditions and spent their life savings to get here. They wanted to be CITIZENS. They wanted to be American. Not just live here.

I, probably more than many, understand why people stream across the border in search of what America holds. We have many employees who have done just that. They simply want a better life for their children. They are good people, they are good citizens. Keeping those people out is not what I, nor many politicians want. What they want is to control the flow. To know who is here. If you are born in this country, there is a record of you. Every single one of us. If you immigrate legally, there is a record of your presence. But if you sneak across the border, you are anonymous, you are faceless. If you commit a crime, be it robbery or terrorism, the ability to hold you accountable is nearly impossible if there is no record that you ever existed.

Yes, perhaps Bush’s temporary worker program sounds like amnesty, but for once, I actually agree with him. Because there are 12 million illegal aliens in this country who we cannot account for, we also will never be able to find them all to deport them which is the current legal option (nor could we afford to). At least as temporary workers, they will be in the system. Accountable to this country for their actions and taxes.

Let’s talk about those taxes for a minute…For simple math’s sake, let’s say each of the 12 million illegal aliens were to owe just $2,000 in taxes a year (I know many of those people are children but hear me out). The illegal alien population would account for $24 BILLION dollars in tax revenue. That money would go a long way toward helping fund things like arts and social programs, or on the other side of the aisle, homeland security or the war on terrorism.

Yes, building a fence sounds tacky, and yes immigrants built this country, but what is wrong with wanting to have a controlled, legal method to this madness?

To all of my Republican friends who still don’t believe I am independent, I AGREE WITH GEORGE W. BUSH ON THIS ONE.

From the John Stewart’s America daily calendar…this sounds so much like something my friends and I would do…but it would most certainly be on a landslide vote!

Notorious Dizzle In The Hooouse!

March 21, 2006 · 2 Comments

The Notorious D.I.G.–The rap stars of the volleyball court (who dig the ball so well…)–that’s us…That’s my 6×6 volleyball team! What a fun team name that will be! There is only one small problem. How do you cheer for our team? Last Wednesday, one of my team mates yelled out a stellar cheer while on the court without thinking…”Go Diggers! Let’s Go!!”…yeah…don’t think we can cheer with that one!! Might not go over to well…

I think I have the design for our shirts though…for the first time, we decided to get shirts! What do you think of my design? First of all, note that any word starting with ‘D’ refers to the word dig, which is a low hit in volleyball. So dizzle means dig…

I HATE Being the IT Department

I have an alien signal on my phone line. They are coming to get me! Like some strange scene in a B quality horror flick. The static is unbearable, and I am currently being forced to listen to the 15 minutes of hold time to talk to a repair guru which sounds something like this:

Brrringg, Brrringg…A representative will assist you shortly. For residential and small business customers, you may chose to conduct your repair request online, at www.sbc.com. This message will not repeat…{terrible saxaphone jazz music for 20 seconds}

Etc., etc., etc.

I’m going with water on the line from all of this rain…but man this sucks…we have JUST enough signal that the calls aren’t rolling over to the second line, so people call and can’t hear us. Ok seriously, the ring, ring sucks…WAIT. NOOOO…I got disconnected…BASTARDS! 10 minutes on hold! I only had 5 minutes to go!!!

Job possibility # 1,046,432

March 17, 2006 · Leave a Comment

I am trying to put my portfolio back together. Digitally this time–online. What a mess. In college, I built a portfolio of about 50 pieces. Probably 35 or so of which I am still proud enough of to use in my current portfolio. BUT. I never saved them in a digitally neutral way. As PDFs for instance. The files were created on a Mac, but I don’t currently have access to one. The files are sort of in digital limbo, stuck in frozen suspension on 4 or 5 CD-Roms. Tomorrow, I get the pleasure of visiting my local Kinko’s and paying $0.30 a minute to use their Macs to transfer all the files into lovely compatible PDFs.

With any luck though, this process will allow me to have a job worthy portfolio when combined with my current work. I am going to try to get back into copywriting now. I know, I know, I have been going through job possibilities like candy. And quite honestly, all of them are still open to me. I still like the idea of all of them, and really all I am doing is expanding my options, giving myself a larger menu from which to work. I just can’t ignore the fact that writing is one thing that I truly, truly love. And rarely do I tire of it.

So added to the long list of potentially life-altering career choices, I am now adding the one thing I am actually trained for, Advertising Copywriter.

Wonder What The Interest Rate Is On That….

March 16, 2006 · Leave a Comment

No wonder American’s are in so much credit debt. Even our government can’t pull out of it. In fact, they just got their credit limit raised! At the moment, every man, woman and child in this country would owe $30,000 if we wanted to pay off our debt.
